Alcova_old

For convenience and organization, Alcova is split into two distinct areas. The first area, Project, is for data being utilized in active research projects. This is the primary storage location where most research data is contained. The second area, Data Curation, is for data used in published research, as well as data that is unpublished but still has value to the research community. This storage is intended for data that will no longer be manipulated and/or is not used in any active research projects.

ARCC Alcova

Alcova System Overview

To provide users with a seamless computing experience, Alcova is connected to the UWyo network for blazing-fast transfer speeds starting at 40 Gbps, to Teton at 100 Gbps via EDR Infiniband, and through Globus Online to our Scientific DMZ at 100 Gbps. The service is designed and operated such that access to data in the Project should be limited only by the receiving endpoint or intervening network connections, not the UW infrastructure. Thus, UW researchers will be able to share (and/or host) research data via a service that provides world-class speeds.

Storage Overview

Alcova is broken down into two distinct areas: Project, and Data Curation.

Project

The Project area is the primary storage area on Alcova. It is a highly collaborative space geared towards project-oriented data storage for use with researcher groups at UWyo and beyond. To provide enhanced collaboration and control, Principal Investigators may assign access permissions to other UWyo users or external users.

Data Curation

The Data Curation area is another storage area on Alcova, further split into two sub-areas. The first sub-area is called Publications. This is a space for storing and presenting research materials, data, and documentation on the Internet. All data stored here is publicly available for download, and cannot be changed once published. There is no charge for any data stored in Publications as long as it meets UWyo publication criteria. The second sub-area is called Archive. This space is called “cold storage”, meaning it contains unpublished data that is no longer part of an active research project but is still valuable to the research community. Data stored in Archive may not be modified but may be retrieved or transferred to Project for modifications.

Price Structure

The cost for storage allocations is based on capacity is available in three distinct billing models:

  • Project Storage — $100 per terabyte per year, billed monthly based on current usage (Free up to 500 GB)

  • Long Term Storage — $1,000 per terabyte for 10 years, billed upfront based on the allocation
