Two-factor Authentication

Overview

Also known as 2FA, two factor authentication is a type of multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA confirms a user's claimed identity by using multiple separate components that fall into the following general categories:

  • Something you know (e.g. your password)

  • Something you posses (e.g. a bank card, or a one-time passcode)

    • Note: a one-time passcode is usually a randomly generated numerical passcode that is valid for one use only.

  • Something you are (e.g. your finger print)

Why is this important?

Security is improved by making it that much harder for an unauthorized actor to be able to supply all of the factors required for access. At UWyo, 2FA confirms a user's claimed identity by utilizing a combination of two different components, your UWyo password and a one-time passcode supplied by the Duo Mobile app.

Note that while “Call me” is supported at UWyo, the timeout windows that ARCC has been allowed are too brief for this to be functional for our services.
