Re-creating Globus Shared Collections and Bookmarks in V5

UW ARCC has upgraded to v5 and created new v5 endpoints to improve data transfer capabilities from our HPC resources. The upgrade from Globus 4 to Globus 5 means all users who have created bookmarks or shared collections to v4 endpoints will need to recreate and/or re-share existing shared endpoints using the new endpoints named:

  • TetonCreek/Beartooth

  • Alcova FileSystem Access

TetonCreek/Beartooth contains all files stored under beartooth including ( beartooth /project /home and /gscratch folders). Alcova Filesystem Access contains Alcova storage folders).

The UW ARCC v4 endpoints are scheduled to be decommissioned and should be recreated on v5 endpoints by May 31st, 2023.

 

Re-creating Bookmarks

  1. Go to the file manager. In The Collection search text box enter: “uw-arcc” (no quotations) and hit enter. Depending on your individual permissions you should see a number of collections. The ones we want to migrate to will be Managed collections on ARCC DTN1 GCSv5.4 Endpoints like shown in the screenshot below:

  2. Click on the first one to bring up the collection in a file manager window and set the path to the top level in which you have access.

  3. Click on the bookmark icon to the right of the path text box to save the location.

     

  4. When choosing a name for your bookmarked location, include v5 in the name so these new bookmarks are easily distinguished from your other bookmarks.

  5. Click the bookmarks menu option on the left side of the globus window to bring up all your bookmarks.

  6. Delete the corresponding v4 bookmark from your bookmark list by selecting the trash icon to the very right side of the bookmark listing.

  7. Now do the same for all collections you have access to by going back to file manager and bookmarking your other collections.

 

Re-creating Shared/Guest Collections

  1. To determine which of your GCSv4 endpoints will need to be migrated, go here to see all Globus collections managed by you. You may be prompted to log in with your UW credentials. If so, proceed with UW login.

  2. Once logged in you should see a website listing all globus endpoint shares you manage. We are concerned with any GCSv4 connections as shown in the screenshot. These will be denoted with “GCSv4 Share” text underneath the collection name.

  3. Make note of these collection shares. We will need to recreate them on the updated collections.

  4. To re-create existing Collections browse to the new v5 location or access it in your newly created bookmarks. Double check the path to make sure it is correct and matches your previous shared collection.

  5. Click Share to create the new Guest Collection.

  6. You will be taken to a window that will likely say “You do not have any Guest Collections on Teton-Creek/Beartooth.” Click the option on the top right to Add Guest Collection.

     

  7. If you’re not in the specific subdirectory you prefer, browse to that directory now, and then name your guest collection as you wish, including v5 in the display name so it is easily distinguishable from your corresponding v4 share.

  8. When ready, click the button to Create Collection.

  9. Once the collection is created, select permissions, then choose the option to “Add Permissions - Share With”.

  10. Select the option to share either by users or group. If by user, enter the e-mail address of the person you would like to share this collection with. If you will be sharing with multiple users, each will need to be added individually.

  11. Check the write box if the user will need to make changes (add, delete or edit) items in the directory.

  12. Lastly, click the button to add permission.
