Open Science Grid [OSG]
About the OSG
The Open Science Grid is a worldwide grid of technological resources to facilitate distributed computing for scientific research. The Open Science Grid Consortium is an organization composed of service and resource providers, researchers from universities and national labs, and computing centers throughout the U.S. Through the consortium, members build and operate a set of pools of shared computing and data storage for distributed high throughput computing. Members of the OSG independently own and manage resources making up the distributed facility. Researchers and scientists may use the OSG for data analysis tasks that are too computationally intensive for their current resources.
ARCC’s Involvement
ARCC has committed resources from Medicinebow to the Open Science Pool (OSPool), an OSG-operated virtual cluster to aggregate opportunistic computing resources from contributing clusters at campuses and other organizations. See a map of OSG Compute Resources here: https://map.opensciencegrid.org/map/iframe?view=OSPool#15.737115,-90.140436%7C3
When to use the OSG
Computing problems that can make use of the OSG pool cross several disciplines, but may include:
Image Analyses
Text-based Analysis
DNA Analysis/bioinformatics
Parameter sweeping
AI Model Optimization
Machine Learning and AI Training
OSG provides more information regarding computational fit on the OSPool. Read more here: https://portal.osg-htc.org/documentation/overview/account_setup/is-it-for-you/#computational-fit-on-the-ospool
If you’re not sure whether the OSG may be helpful in your computations, please e-mail arcc-help@uwyo.edu to inquire. ARCC Staff can help you make that determination based on your project, data, and workflow.
OSG Accounts
Requesting an account is a straightforward process but subject to some prerequisites. Researchers affiliated with a project at a US-based academic, government or non-profit institution are eligible, and the OSG is not subject to any costs.
Prerequisites
You must use the OSG for academic or research purposes.
You must be affiliated with a project at a US-based academic, government, or non-profit institution.
You should be the research project PI. If you are not the PI on your project, we recommend that the listed PI make a request for the project on the OSG and add you as a member to their project.
OSG Account Request Submission & Process
Below are the general steps for OSG Account submission and creation. Please see OSG Documentation here for more detailed information.
Users wishing to request an account may submit a request through the OSG Portal, here: https://portal.osg-htc.org/application.
Requestors will be required to meet with the OSG facilitation team for a short consultation and orientation.
Upon consultation and orientation completion, you must register for a specific OSPool Access Point.
Accessing your OSPool Account
If accessing using a uw.osg-htc.org Access Point, you must have registered for an access point and have an approved OSG account.
