ARCC Prerequisites_old

In order to use the high performance computing and research data storage that ARCC provides, users must first meet the prerequisites. The requirements are simple: users must be a UWyo faculty member or sponsored by one, possess an active UWyo account, be enrolled in two-face authentication, and have access to the internet.

If you have any issues, concerns, or questions please contact ARCC.

Prerequisites

There are a few things you must have in place before you can use ARCC High-Performance Computing or Research Data Storage core services. They are:

  1. Be a UWYO Faculty Member or be sponsored by one

  2. Have an active UWYO account

  3. Enrolled in Two-Factor Authentication

  4. Internet Access

UWyo Faculty Sponsorship

For UWYO faculty members can sponsor their own HPC projects or Storage Allocations, while students, post-doctoral researchers, or research staff must use a UWyo faculty member as their Principal Investigator, or PI, as their sponsor.

This is because there must be an on-campus contact to be responsible for these projects, and if we are doing a job as a university, students will graduate and post-docs will get jobs and won’t be able to serve as long-term contacts.

An Active UWyo Account

ARCC resources are reserved for current UWYO Faculty, Students, and staff who do research for the University. Therefore an active UWyo account is required to be eligible to use our resources.

However, if a student graduates or if a UWYO faculty member is working with a collaborator at another institution, but both require access to ARCC resources, the Faculty Principal investigator can request an external collaborator account to get created for those situations.

An External collaborator is issued by UWIT and costs $10 as a one-time setup fee. Once the account is created then the Faculty PI can request the Collaborator to be added to their Teton project or petaLibrary allocation. You can request an External Collaborator account.

It’s important to know that ARCC does not manage UWyo accounts, we rely on UWIT to manage these. If your UWyo account is locked out or having issues, ARCC is unable to fix problems. If you encounter problems, please contact UWIT for help.

Enrolled in Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, strengthens access security by requiring two methods to verify your identity. These methods can include something you know -- like a username and password, plus something you have -- like a smartphone app, a token, or a phone number to approve authentication requests.

At ARCC we are dedicated to providing security to researchers’ projects, but want to make it as convenient as possible for them to do their work. Therefore, we must ask them to use two-factor authentication when logging into ARCC resources, while staying accessible.

One of our frequently asked questions is “Do I need a smartphone to use two-factor?” No, there are three ways of using 2FA at UWYO.

  1. Enroll with the Duo mobile app. It’s the easiest to use and makes sense to many users who use their smartphones or tablet on a daily basis.

  2. Purchase a YubiKey. This is a small USB device that you can press to generate your second factor. It costs $50 and can be purchased from UWIT.

  3. The minimum thing required for the two-factor is a phone number. You can enroll any landline with Duo to get your second factor like a phone call. The link to do that is the same as option 1.

Internet Access

About that accessibility, ARCC resources are generally available on the Internet. Meaning, if you have internet access and the three prior prerequisites you can theoretically use ARCC resources from anywhere in the world.
